Are my pets and I safe?
Coyotes are brand new to NYC. Even the suburbs surrounding the city have had coyotes for only a few decades. But new shouldn't mean scary. You are more likely to be hit by a subway, killed by a vending machine, or attached by a dog than to be injured by a coyote.
The secret to any coyotes success is avoiding humans at all costs. They do so by primarily living deep in parks where people are less common. Coyotes are most active at night and around dawn and dusk. Remember, the coyote might not be a threatened species, but it is the target of predator control in many places across its range. For the coyote, staying alive means staying clear of us. So, help them out. Follow the advice put together by our students. Simple steps can go a long way in avoiding interaction and conflict.
